چکیده

We resolve an open problem due to Tetsuo Asano, showing how to compute the shortest path in a polygon, given in a read only memory, using sublinear space and subquadratic time. Specifically, given a simple polygon P with n vertices in a read only memory, and additional working memory of size m, the new algorithm computes the shortest path (in P ) in O(n2/m) expected time, assuming m = O(n/ log n). This requires several new tools, which we believe to be of independent interest. Specifically, we show that violator space problems, an abstraction of low dimensional linearprogramming (and LP-type problems), can be solved using constant space and expected linear time, by modifying Seidel’s linear programming algorithm and using pseudo-random sequences.

Exact Shortest Path Queries for Planar Graphs Using Linear Space

We provide the first linear-space data structure with provable sublinear query time for exact point-topoint shortest path queries in planar graphs. We prove that for any planar graph G with non-negative arc lengths and for any > 0 there is a data structure that supports exact shortest path and distance queries in G with the following properties: the data structure can be created in time O(n lg(...

Computing Geodesic Furthest Neighbors in Simple Polygons

An algorithm is presented for computing geodesic furthest neighbors for all the vertices of a simple polygon, where geodesic denotes the fact that distance between two points of the polygon is defined as the length of an Euclidean shortest path connecting them within the polygon. The algorithm runs in O(n log n) time and uses O(n) space; n being the number of vertices of the polygon. As a corol...

Min-Link Shortest Path Maps and Fréchet Distance

We present shortest path maps that support min-link queries from any source point on a line segment to destination points in either a simple polygon or a polygonal domain (a polygon with holes). These structures are more versatile than the traditional shortest path map from a fixed source point, and we use them to compute the min-link Fréchet distance between two polygonal curves. In addition t...

Shortest paths in simple polygons with polygon-meet constraints

We study a constrained version of the shortest path problem in simple polygons, in which the path must visit a given target polygon. We provide a worst-case optimal algorithm for this problem and also present a method to construct a subdivision of the simple polygon to efficiently answer queries to retrieve the shortest polygon-meeting paths from a single-source to the query point. The algorith...

Querying Two Boundary Points for Shortest Paths in a Polygonal Domain

We consider a variant of two-point Euclidean shortest path query problem: given a polygonal domain, build a data structure for two-point shortest path query, provided that query points always lie on the boundary of the domain. As a main result, we show that a logarithmic-time query for shortest paths between boundary points can be performed using Õ(n) preprocessing time and Õ(n) space where n i...
